La Vernaz is a peaceful mountain village nestling in the hillside like a sentry standing guard between the Aulps and Brevon valleys. On the Dranse side, two pillars mark the entrance to the village, vestiges of fortifications erected in the XVI century against the invading Swiss. These symbolic gateways are called the "Portes de la Garde" or the "Portes des Véros" which comes from the local inhabitants' cry of "deo vero" (our god is real) as opposed to the God of the protestant Helvetians.
