With a view of Morzine's old town, the village of
Essert-Romand is built on a wide verdant plateau, from where numerous
hikes start. Acces to the Roc d'Enfer foothpaths, and the moraine circle of
Graydon, which today is still home to an active pastoral community in the summer
(goats and cows). Essert-Romand (whose name comes from Essartum Romanorum,
meaning land cleared by the Romans, who came here in the reign of Julius Caesar
to clear this Alpine hillside), has become a village holiday resort, midway
between les Gets (9 km by the Col de l'Encrenaz) and Morzine (4 km), with its
neighbouring shops and amenities.
