Villages

Situated in the heart of the Vallée d'Aulps, the village of Saint Jean d'Aulps has inherited its name from the old French word for "alpage", meaning high mountain pasture.
Thanks to its abbey and the monks who lived there, Saint Jean d'Aulps lays claim to be the ancestor of the surrounding villages in the Vallée d'Aulps.
With the growth of the skiing industry, Saint Jean d'Aulps has also become an important winter sports resort destination. It offers many natural advantages for skiers and snowboarders, including the famous Roc d'Enfer circuit. The ski resort has an excellent snow record, and is an integral part of the Portes du Soleil.
